Can an esthetician operate a laser in Georgia?

Georgia is one of the more workable states in the country for a non-physician laser staffing model — within a boundary that is easy to cross without noticing.

The short answer

Yes, as a licensed Assistant Laser Practitioner (ALP). Under Rule 360-35-.05 the ALP works under the supervision of a Board-licensed physician or a licensed senior laser practitioner.

Patients must be examined before treatment by a consulting physician, PA, or APRN — except for laser hair removal and pulsed light, where neither on-site supervision nor the exam is required.

Supervision is the looser requirement

Rule 360-35-.07(1)(d) requires a senior laser practitioner or consulting physician to be present at the facility or immediately available for consultation and supervision either personally or via telecommunications. A supervisor on video satisfies that. A name on a contract with nobody reachable does not — "immediately available" means able to respond while the patient is in the chair.

The exam is the citation waiting to happen

For every laser or energy service other than hair removal and pulsed light, Rule 360-35-.05 requires the patient to be examined before the service by a consulting physician, or by a PA or APRN who holds a cosmetic laser practitioner licence. The exam has no remote-supervision equivalent.

Practices routinely run a patient through a package of treatments on the strength of one exam at intake, or none documented at all. The rule ties the exam to the service, not to the client relationship.

Where an esthetician's scope stops

External energy treatments — RF skin tightening, ultrasound, cryolipolysis, microwave — are now cosmetic laser services under Rule 360-35-.01, so an ALP may perform them with the exam and supervision above. RF microneedling, ablative resurfacing, and microneedling with PRP or PRF break the skin or sit outside the non-ablative definition; those are delegated medical acts for an APRN or PA under a filed protocol, not for an esthetician.

Related questions

Can an esthetician do RF microneedling in Georgia?

No. RF microneedling is an energy device under Chapter 360-35 and it penetrates the skin, which is a medical act that must be delegated under O.C.G.A. § 43-34-23 — placing it with an APRN or PA under a filed protocol, or a physician, not with an esthetician holding a laser practitioner licence.

Can an esthetician perform a superficial chemical peel in Georgia?

A superficial peel falls within esthetician (cosmetology) scope and is not a delegated medical act. A medium-depth peel — typically TCA at 35% or above, or Jessner's plus TCA — is a medical act for an APRN or PA under a filed protocol.
